"Vasilisa the Beautiful" illustrated by Alexander Koshkin (story adapted by Elizabeth Winthrop)

alexander koshkin      vasilisa the beautiful      elizabeth winthrop      russian fairy tales      baba yaga      fairy tales      illustration      i wonder if in the original form of the story      however old that may be      the doll was supposed to be an idol/religious object      the concept of feeding it and asking it for help strongly suggests religious purpose to me      vasilisa is devout and faithful and as such is rewarded by her deity      whoever that may be      there is such a dearth of accessible scholarship (in the english speaking world) on ancient slavic and related religions      i just want to know all the things is that too much to ask?
